Liang Chen

Liang Chen a photographer from Zhenjiang Shi , Guandong , China has embarked on a visual journey across China,"Somewhere Beside the Water '' documenting the breathtaking beauty and undeniable scars of its natural waterscapes through the lens of a medium format film camera. This choice of equipment, known for its unparalleled detail and depth, allows for a poignant exploration of the environment's current state, capturing both its enduring majesty and the marks of human impact. The project meticulously chronicles the vibrant life along China's lakes, rivers, and coasts, revealing a complex narrative of coexistence, dependence, and, increasingly, conflict.

The rapid economic expansion of recent decades has catapulted China to the forefront of global development. Yet, this progress has not come without cost. Intensive industrialization and urbanization have exerted considerable pressure on the natural ecological systems, leading to significant environmental challenges, including air and water pollution. These issues not only threaten the physical health of the population but also pose a risk to the spiritual and cultural connection to the natural world, a connection that has been nurtured over millennia.

"Somewhere Beside the Water" aims to serve as a visual meditation on these pressing environmental and climatic concerns. By presenting stark, vivid imagery of the waterways that have sustained life for generations, the project seeks to evoke a sense of urgency and a call to action. It is a reminder of the fragility of our environment and the pressing need for conservation and sustainability practices. Through this lens, the project aspires to inspire a collective reflection on the ways in which development and progress can be harmonized with the natural world, fostering a renewed commitment to the protection and reverence of our planet.

As we stand at the crossroads of tradition and modernity, facing the escalating threats of global warming and extreme weather, "Somewhere Beside the Water" is more than just a photographic collection; it is a poignant plea for mindfulness and action. It invites viewers to contemplate the beauty of our natural surroundings and the critical role we play in its preservation. The project underscores the importance of nurturing a balanced relationship with nature, one that honors our heritage and ensures a sustainable future for generations to come.
