Jorge Mónaco

Jorge Mónaco is a distinguished Argentinian photographer, recognized for his impactful work that often explores social themes and minority groups. In 2024, he was a finalist in the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, celebrated for his series titled "Retratos y paisajes" ("Portraits and Landscapes"). This series features compelling imagery that highlights the lives of people from various minority groups, whether defined by ethnicity, religion, or gender. His photograph of a man in a striking robe against a snowy, desolate landscape exemplifies his ability to blend social commentary with artistic expression.

Mónaco's work extends beyond this series; he has received numerous accolades for his contributions to photography, including a Highly Commended recognition from the BarTur Photo Award 2022 for his photographic essay "Los Menonitas". He also won the acquisition prize for the second-best work at the 109th National Salon of Visual Arts in 2021. Additionally, Mónaco is deeply involved in education as the director of the National School of Photography (ENFO) in Argentina, where he nurtures the next generation of photographers.

Mennonite

Mennonite in Argentina are part of a larger global Anabaptist denomination known for their Christian pacifism, simple living, and emphasis on community. They originally migrated to Argentina from Europe and North America in the early 20th century, seeking religious freedom and land for farming. In Argentina, they established colonies, primarily in rural areas, where they could live according to their religious beliefs and traditions. These colonies are largely self-sufficient, with their own schools, churches, and economic systems. Agriculture is a significant part of their livelihood, with dairy farming, cattle raising, and crop farming being prevalent. The Mennonite communities in Argentina are known for their conservative lifestyle, often avoiding modern technologies and dressing in traditional, simple clothing. Despite their isolationist tendencies, Mennonites in Argentina have interacted with the broader society through the sale of agricultural products and, in some cases, through tourism.
